Each demo has a core walkthrough for class and independent practice to work through on your own after class. The full guide also works if you missed class: complete the core route first, then the independent sections.

  1. Git/GitHub and VS Code setup
  2. Shell navigation
  3. Python basics
  4. Control structures and debugging

All files are in the Lecture 01 demo folder on GitHub. Follow Demo 1 in your assignment clone. For Demos 2–4, create a separate folder named 01-practice in your home directory and open it in VS Code with File → Open Folder. Each code block has a source link; use Download raw file on GitHub or paste the code into a new file with the shown filename. Save with File → Save (Ctrl+S; Cmd+S on Mac).

Run commands in Terminal → New Terminal (Ctrl+Shift+backtick, also Control on Mac). A separate Terminal or WSL Ubuntu window also works; use cd to enter your working folder first.

Demo 1: Git setup

Core walkthrough

Start at 1.1 and continue through 1.7: verify your account, terminal, Python and Git, open your fork, then save and sync a change. If a tool is already installed, check it in 1.4 and continue; if it is missing, follow the installation steps there before running later demos.

Route Work through
Core walkthrough Account, editor, terminal and WSL, Python and Git, fork and clone, sign in, save and sync
Independent practice Explore the optional Student Developer Pack and editor extensions after your first change appears on GitHub.

The setup steps below include the full installation route; later demos depend on a working terminal and Python.

Setup source on GitHub

  3. Open GitHub email settings.
  4. Enable Keep my email addresses private and copy your GitHub noreply address for your Git configuration.
